Bachelor of Arts (Hons.) in English

The Department of English under the Faculty of Education, Health and Technology offers Bachelor of Arts (Hons.) in English Literature (ENG). The department aims at producing good human beings who will be able to think differently and capable of meeting up the demands and challenges of the fastest growing globalized world. It makes every effort to kindle humanistic learning with the capacity of rational and imaginative responses through literature and language studies.

To enhance and improve the innovation and creativity of the students, the department promotes various curricular activities like seminars, workshops, literary quiz competitions, literary and linguistic presentations, text-based movie-shows, debate competition and composition. To inflame the zeal of learning among the students, the department persistently encourages extra-curricular activities like production of stage drama, book reading competition, cultural programs, etc.

After successful completion of this program students will have a solid foundation in English literature. The graduates of this department will be unique because they have the freedom to design a career of their own choice. Our students would be an adaptive lifelong learner, passionate professional and enthusiastic. The interdisciplinary learning technology will prepare them as professionally competent to choose their career at home and abroad.

• Duration: Bachelor of Arts (Hons.) in English Literature (BA Hons. in English) is a four-year course. This four-year consists of 8 semesters, and each semester comprises 6 months.
• Credit requirement: To acquire the degree, a student has to earn 128 credits.
• Degree requirements: Minimum CGPA 2.50.
• Evaluation system: Outcome-based evaluation system recommended by UGC of Bangladesh.

The Department of English prepared its curriculum using Outcome-Based Education (OBE) format as per the UGC guidance in English studies. Most of the courses on the curriculum of this department are literature courses. However, apart from the literature courses, the department offers courses on English Language, Linguistics and some others to cater to the current demand of the time.
The objectives of these courses are to develop students’ English language proficiency, their communicative competence, translation skills and also to develop their understanding of the society and environment in which they live. Along with the major courses the department offers some General Education (GED) courses like Emergence and History of Bangladesh, Bangladeshi Art and Culture, Introduction to Sociology, and learning Computer skills.

The ENG program consists of the following courses:

New students are admitted to the program two times a year – in Spring Semester and Summer Semester. To apply for admission, the candidates will require 12-years of formal education with the expected results as mentioned below:

• Minimum 2.5 GPA both in SSC or equivalent exams (Dakhil, Vocational) and HSC or equivalent exams (Alim, Vocational, BM, Diploma in Commerce, Diploma in Business Studies from any group. GPA 2 may be considered provided total GPA in both levels stands at 6.00. Or,
• ‘O’ level examination 5 subjects and for ‘A’ level examination 2 subjects must be passed respectively from which at least ‘B’ grade or GPA ‘4’ must be obtained in 4 courses and ‘C’ grade or GPA ‘3.5’ must be obtained in the remaining three subjects out of total 7 courses in both the levels. or,
• Diploma from a recognized institution with a GPA of 2.00 (out of 4) or equivalent.
• Sons/daughters of Freedom Fighters with a total GPA of 5.00 in SSC and HSC.

• Total Fees (8 semesters,128 credits): Tk.  295,000
• With a payment of Tk. 15,000 a student can get admission/registration. The rest of the amount can be paid in the beginning of each semester.

• Application Form fee Taka 500.
• Library caution money Tk. 1,000, which is refundable and thus not included in the total amount.
• Deposit at least Tk. 15,000 as registration fee during admission and the rest of the amount can be deposited in the beginning of each semester.
• The semester fee, LAB fee and tuition fee of 1stsemester should be deposited within 15 days of admission.

• For all, 40% waiver of Semester and Tuition Fees (for 50th Year of Bangladesh’s Independence).
